Desiccated vs freeze-dried organ supplements: the difference
You will see both words on organ supplement labels. Both describe ways to remove water from beef organs so they can be turned into capsules or powder.
Desiccated
"Desiccated" means dried. In supplements it usually means the organ was dried with warm, controlled air and then ground into powder. It is the older, simpler method.
Freeze-dried
Freeze-drying freezes the organ first, then removes the ice under vacuum. It takes longer and costs more. Brands often choose it because it dries without heating the tissue much.
Which is better?
We do not know of a standard comparison that shows one is better for everyone, and a label's drying method alone does not tell you about quality. Sourcing, amount per serving and third-party testing tell you more.
What to look for
- The drying method is stated on the label or the brand's site.
- Organs and milligrams per serving are listed.
- A lab report from an outside lab is available.
- The cattle source is described clearly.
